TJ: Can you tell us about your recent projects?
Koshino: In 2012, I did the costume design for The Art of Japan Drum “Drum Tao” and the launch of the Cashmere 2012 Autumn Winter Total Collection Line. Projects in 2013 include the March costume design for the Yuzuru (Twilight Crane) Opera in Vietnam and a museum exhibition in Sao Paulo in November.

TJ: In recent years, what do you think have been the most significant changes in women’s fashion?

Koshino: The personality that it used to have is gone, and it is becoming a cheap image. It is very regrettable.

TJ: Which Japanese designers do you admire the most and why?
Koshino: Mr. Issey Miyake. He is more than a designer.

TJ: Which international designers do you admire the most and why?
Koshino: Azzedine Alaia. He never ceases to make reliable products.

TJ: Which celebrities today do you think wear the most leading-edge fashion designs?
Koshino: Diana Ross used to, but now I think Beyoncé does.

Koshino: Of course. I hope they wear wild and powerful clothes.

TJ: Which cities are today’s fashion capitals of the world, and which city creates the fashion you admire the most?
Koshino: I admire Paris as the stage of fashion, Italian artisans and Japanese craftsmanship.

TJ: When you first entered the international fashion world, was it challenging for a Japanese designer to be respected?
Koshino: No. Winning of the So-en Award at the age of 19 was my breakthrough.

TJ: How do you feel about companies like Uniqlo are impacting the world of fashion by selling very low-cost clothing?
Koshino: Uniqlo is succeeding in globalization and borderlessness through a high level of cost performance. It is significant. Products such as Heattech with value as a tool in daily life will have an effect on the world. tj
