The Queen of Kawaii Headlines Coachella

U.S. superstar Billie Eilish and Japanese pop star Kyary Pamyu Pamyu simultaneously headlined stages at the world-renowned Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio, California, which was held over two weekends in May 2022. Kyary’s appearance at the festival gained her a new legion of fans, not only among Coachella concertgoers, but also among music lovers around the world who watched the live-streamed event. Kyary, known for her fusion of the kawaii (cute) and creepy-chic styles, became a Japanese cultural icon after her debut single in 2011. While in California, she performed a sold-out show at L.A.’s Fonda Theater and attended events to help promote local businesses in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles. She even managed to sneak in an L.A. Angels of Anaheim baseball game to see Japan’s national treasure, Shohei Ohtani. Tokyo Journal Editor-in-Chief Anthony Al-Jamie sat down for his second interview with the J-pop star to talk about her trip to California and her career.

TJ: Tell us about your trip to the United States.
KYARY: Throughout the two weeks, I experienced happiness and sadness, as well as the best and worst moments. I was able to meet many artists from around the world in Coachella. We took pictures together and talked about how it would be fun if we released a song together. I was very anxious, but after I got on the stage, the audience’s enthusiasm made it an amazing memory. At this year’s Coachella, there was one fan who became famous in Japan. His nickname is “Bandana Aniki (brother).” He is an American guy who wore a bandana on his forehead and seemed to have a fun time dancing. He came for both weeks of the festival, so I think he was a diehard fan. I enjoyed the culture when I went to a party at the Japanese Consulate. I talked to different Americans and Japanese Americans on how we can build momentum for Little Tokyo, an ethnically Japanese American neighborhood in Los Angeles. I also went thrifting.

TJ: How was playing for an American audience different from a Japanese audience?
KYARY: Currently, in Japan, the audience is not allowed to shout or speak loudly. However, in the U.S., for the first time in awhile, I was able to experience a lively audience where everyone was singing and dancing. Every time I come back to this country, I am able to build up confidence, and that helps me perform even better in Japan.

TJ: What’s your favorite place that you’ve visited on tour?
KYARY: The place I wanted to visit the most was Salvation Mountain. When I saw it online, it seemed like a very colorful and cute valley on a scale that does not exist in Japan. I did a photoshoot for my fan club’s magazine there.

2022 年 5 月、カリフォルニア 州インディオで２週連続開催された世界的に有名なコーチェラ・ヴァレー・ミュージック・アンド・アーツ・フェスティバルでアメリカの大スター、ビリー・アイリッシュと共にヘッドライナーを務めたきゃりーぱみゅぱみゅ。コーチェラ最終公演の前日、バックダンサーの数名が体調不良になってしまうというハプニングに見舞われたが、本番当日、彼女は１人でステージに立ち、観客を熱狂させた。J-POP の革命児であるきゃりーは、コンサート来場者だけではなく、世界中でライブ配信を見ていた観客の心をつかんだ。「きもシック」と「カワイイ」を融合したスタイルで知られるきゃりーは、2011年にデビューして以来、日本の文化的アイコンとして知られている。カリフォルニアに滞在中、彼女はロサンゼルスのフォンダ・シアターで単独公演を行ったのに加え、リトル・トーキョーのローカルビジネスを応援するイベントにも参加。アナハイムの球場でエンジェルズの大谷翔平選手の試合もお忍びで観戦した。『東京ジャーナル』編集長のアントニー・アルジェイミーが、本誌２度目のインタビューで、今回のカリフォルニア滞在と彼女のキャリアについて話を聞いた。

TJ: 今回のアメリカへの旅行について教えてください。
KYARY: 2 週間くらいの滞在だったのですが、本当に楽しいことやうれしいことと、悲しいことやショックなこと、最高の瞬間と最悪な瞬間を経験しました。コーチェラでのコンサートは、すごくすごく不安だったんですが、いざステージに上がってみると、とっても盛り上がって、楽しい思い出になりました。コーチェラのバックヤードでは、いろんな海外のアーティストさんと交流ができま した。一緒に写真を撮ったり、今度一緒に曲を出せたら楽しいね、などとたくさんお話したりしました。コーチェラ公演の中で、日本ですごく話題になっていたファンの方がいて、「バンダナ兄貴」というあだ名が付けられていたんです。頭にバンダナを付けて、すごく楽しそうに踊っているアメリカ人の男性で、１週目から私も注目していたんですけど、２週目にも来てくれて、すごく熱烈なファンの方なのかな、と思いました。最も文化を楽しむことができたのは、日本の領事館のパーティーです。そこでは、外国の方から日本の方、日系アメリカ人の方も集まって、いろんな交流をしました。どのようにリトル・トーキョーを盛り上げていけばいいか、などの話をして、すごく楽しみましたね。あとは、メルローズの古着屋さんに行って、ショッピングもしました。

TJ: アメリカと日本で客席の雰囲気に違いを感じましたか？
KYARY: まず、今日本でライブするときって、声を出しちゃいけないんですよね。でも、久しぶりにアメリカのライブ会場で、オーディエンスがす ごく盛り上がっている声とか、みんなが歌ってたり踊ってたりする姿を見て、やっぱりすごく盛り上がるなあ、というイメージがありました。いつも、アメリカでライブをして帰ってくると、自分に自信が付いて、日本でもすごくいいパフォーマンスができます。

TJ: ツアーで訪れたお気に入りの場所はどこですか？
KYARY: ずっと行ってみたかったのが、サルベーションマウンテンでした。そこは、ネットで見たときに、すごくカラフルでかわいい山だな、と思っていて、なかなか日本には、あんなにダイナミックな、カラフルな山っていうのはなかったりするので、そこで撮影してみたいな、と思いました。今回はファンクラブの会報誌を、サルベーションマウンテンで撮影して、それを出します。
