Heroes of the Sengoku Era Revived
The Shingen-ko Festival has been held in Kōfu, the capital of Yamanashi Prefecture, every April since 1970 to commemorate the legacy of Takeda Shingen, a renowned general of the Warring States period of the 15th and 16th centuries. While this event is relatively new compared to other Japanese festivals, it has gained support from local residents and gradually expanded in size. The festival was briefly postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it returned in full swing in 2022 with high attendance by both Japanese residents and foreign tourists. Today it is recognized as a major festival and a source of local pride.
The Shingen-ko Festival: A Showcase of Local Culture
Compared with other Japanese festivals, Shingen-ko Festival is young. It was created on April 12, 1970 to commemorate the anni- versary of Takeda Shingen’s death. Initially a small-scale event, the festival has gained popularity thanks to its celebration of Kōfu’s culture, Shingen’s achievements and the legacy of the Takeda clan. While local residents and government officials are the primary organizers of the festival, Shingen-ko Festival has become a nation- ally recognized event. The festival attracts and captivates people with its grand historical reenactment of Takeda Shingen’s life and legacy.
The Kōshū Battalion in the Streets of Kōfu
The climax of the Shingen-ko Festival’s main event is the Kōshū Battalion Deployment. This spectacular reenactment portrays Takeda Shingen’s forces setting out for the Battle of Kawanakajima where he fought Uesugi Kenshin, a rival warlord who ruled the northern part of Japan. Over 1,000 warriors dressed in armor and samurai costumes march through the streets, creating an immersive experience in which spectators feel as if they have been transported back to the Warring States period. This procession has an impressive level of authenticity. Details, such as the armor, battle flags, and weapons, are meticulously crafted based on historical records. The dedication to historical accuracy has enthralled even the most passionate of history buffs. Thousands of tourists come from afar to witness this grand event, revitalizing the local community in addition to celebrating Shingen and the city’s history.
The Culture Nurtured by the Kōfu Basin
The Kōfu Basin is a region where local culture and agriculture thrive. The fruits and wine produced here are highly acclaimed in Japan and overseas. Visitors to the festival can enjoy various local specialties, including unique traditional sweets like shingen mochi. The basin is also surrounded by picturesque mountains, creating a distinctive landscape where natural beauty and historical heritage blend seamlessly. These rich regional characteristics make the Shingen-ko Festival more than just a tourist event: it is a showcase of the area's cultural heritage and charm.
The Enchanting Night Procession
In the evening, the Kōshū Battalion stages a mesmerizing ceremony, creating a scene full of fantasy and grandeur. During this nighttime march, the armor and battle flags glow under the moonlight and the sound of shell horns and drums echo as the procession traverses the city. The otherworldly atmosphere feels like a glance back in time, allowing onlookers to feel apart of history. Outside of the procession, the festival holds informational lectures on Takeda Shingen for those eager to deepen their knowledge of the feudal warlord’s history. Those fascinated by the TV series Shōgun can take the opportunity to learn more about Takeda Shingen, the warlord who was Tokugawa Ieyasu’s greatest opponent, and the culture and history of his Kōshū stronghold. tj
