Akira Kurosawa was born in Tokyo and from a young age was inspired by art and reading. He began his film career as an assistant director for the renowned Japanese director Kajiro Yamamoto. Kurosawa was well read, and Yamamoto appreciated his vast knowledge. Within five years Kurosawa was writing scripts and directing sequences for Yamamoto’s films. In addition to being a great filmmaker, Kurosawa had an eye for selecting actors. He chose people with strong emotions and distinct facial expressions. He went on to make some 30 movies, many featuring his favorite leading actor Toshiro Mifune.

Kurosawa and his work influenced nearly every filmmaker of his time, providing inspiration for others in making their films. Many of his films and screenplays were remade with similar plots and characters. “Seven Samurai” inspired “The Magnificent Seven” and “A Bug’s Life.” “Yojimbo” led to “A Fistful of Dollars” and “Last Man Standing,” and “Hidden Fortress” was a source of inspiration for “Star Wars.”

Akira Kurosawa was selected as Samurai #2 because:
»»he is one of the most influential filmmakers of our time
»»he embraced international relations and partnered with Hollywood filmmakers

»»he inspired people to see things through different perspectives through the use of the most powerful media in the world

»»his work continues to teach and inspire young filmmakers around the world

On the 100th anniversary of his birth Kurosawa was honored with comments by many of Hollywood’s leading directors including the following:

Martin Scorsese, who acted as Van Gogh in Kurosawa’s “Dreams,” said, “Let me put it simply. Kurosawa was my master and the master of so many other filmmakers over the years… Kurosawa had us in the hollow of his hand. Every image, every twist in the plot revealed a master.”

Richard Gere, who appeared in Kurosawa’s “Rhapsody in August,” said of Kurosawa, “One of the greatest artists of the 20th century. Seminal. Not just for Japan but for the whole world of cinema.”

According to film director Oliver Stone, Kurosawa commanded respect. “He had a certain presence like an emperor. He walked into the room and people looked. They stopped and they looked… He had action plus psychology and he was good at it… He cuts through to the essence of person.”

George Lucas, who along with Francis Ford Coppola co-produced Kurosawa’s “Kagemusha”, stated, “It’s no secret that I’m a fan of Kurosawa’s work, and that his films were a source of inspiration for my own Star Wars saga... I have no doubt his work will continue to inspire for generations to come. He had a tremendous influence on my life, on my work, and on my sensitivity to visual story telling.”

Steven Spielberg, who produced Kurosawa’s “Dreams,” said, “starting with his very first film “Sugata Sanjiro” to his last film “Madadayo,” Akira Kurosawa has been a maestro to my entire generation and to every generation of filmmakers who watch movies, are inspired by movies, and learn through movies.… The time I spent with Kurosawa has been reflected in my own work as all of the time I spent with Kurosawa’s films has done so much to inspire me to be a better filmmaker… I have learned more as a result of him than almost any filmmaker on the face of the Earth. ” tj
